Please include your name, occupation and location. The petition will be sent to the Hamburg Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Culture around March 1st, even though you can still sign later. If you know of others who may want to sign, please feel free to forward it. Very many thanks, textz.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hamburg Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Culture Mittelweg 36 20148 Hamburg February 2004 The undersigned have taken notice of the legal confrontation between the Hamburg Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Culture and Sebastian Ltgert, the owner of the website textz.com, who has been accused of the illegal distribution of two works by Theodor W. Adorno, of which the foundation holds the copyrights. Even though we are not in a position to make a judgement on the damages that the foundation has suffered through the distribution of these texts, we are convinced that, in order to contain these damages, your willingness to debate the issue at stake would be much more appropriate than a legal procedure. It seems that in this particular case, a purely juridical argumentation may not only disregard the intention of the works under your protection, but also contradict the foundation's very aim to advance science and culture. We kindly ask you to rethink your position on the issue, to permanently suspend the warrant of arrest that the foundation has obtained against the defendant, and to undertake the effort to seek a private settlement.
