The lodge-keeper came looking for a sandal that was being made but was unfinished and had been left on a window sill. He failed to find it. Someone asked him, "Was it 'hidden' by one of his followers?" Mencius said to the lodge-keeper, "You think my followers came to steal sandals, don't you?" The lodge-keeper said, "Probably not." Mencius replied, "When I give instruction, I neither run after those who leave, nor do I rebuff those who stay. If they come with a mind to learn, then I teach them. There is nothing more to it than that." *** I find this a touching story because it's like a snapshot out of Mencius daily life, a sandal that has disappeared, a student could have stolen it perhaps, but Mencius is teaching noble principles, and not a schoolteacher that goes around policing his students.
