"I know that all"

I know that all beneath the moon decays,
Sleep, Silence' child, sweet father of soft rest -
Fair Moon, who with the cold and silver shine,
Fair is my yoke, though grievous be my pains.

Like the Idalian queen,
Phoebus - Arise
My thoughts, hold mortal strife!
As, in a dusky and tempestuous night
How many times night's silent queen her face -
My lute - be as thou was then thou didst grow?

This life, which seems so fair -
The Permanancy of Life -
The World a Game -
If crost with all mishaps be my poor life?
Doth then the world go thus, doth all this move?

No Trust in Time,
Change should breed Change:
The Book of the world
For the Baptist!

- William Drummond of Hawthornden

Envoi

Tam Lin,
Fair Annie -
Get up and Bar the Door!
