Unusual Clouds Over Providence http://www.alansondheim.org/pvdcloud11.jpg http://www.alansondheim.org/pvdcloud.mp4 These clouds, moving at somewhat high, passed over downtown Providence this afternoon. They're extremely unusual, and seem to be combinations of wave clouds, kelvin-helmholtz instabilities, and mammatus clouds. the images in the video are in the same sequence as taken; you can see the rapid transformations as the types (which also included the usual cumulus) revealed unusual forms of turbulence. The sequence lasted about an hour. The resolution of the original images is 2592 x 1944; levels were compressed to bring out details. Oddly, I found a book for sale at the library on how to dance - exactly what the clouds, indeed the atmosphere, was doing.
